HOLOCAUST MEMORIAL DAY 27th JANUARY
Holocaust Memorial Day (HMD) is commemorated internationally on 27th January each year. This date was chosen as it is the anniversary of the day in 1945 on which the Soviet Army liberated the largest Nazi concentration camp – Auschwitz-Birkenau.
Each year, the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust urges everyone in the UK to pause and reflect on what can happen when racism, prejudice and exclusionary behaviour are left unchecked. HMD helps people to see how the lessons of the past can play a part in our communities today.
The HMD website gives a great deal of information and resources for each year's event. In 2010 it was on the theme The Legacy of Hope. It is also possible to find out about events near you, many of which are free and open to the public.
The site carries information about other genocides and survivors' stories, books etc.
Each year over a million people visit Auschwitz-Birkenau. An article by the CTE Inter Faith Officer with links can be found under Towards a Culture of Dialogue/Personal Reflections. A DVD about Auschwitz is also available to borrow from CTE.
The Archbishop of Canterbury's message for Holocaust Memorial Day can be accessed through this link.
