CTE Books on Amazon
We have just listed a number of our publications on Amazon but they are still available through the publications page. The purpose is to ensure no-one is selling our stuff at silly prices and to raise our profile a bit. Unfortunately, if a publication (like, sadly, Called to Be One) is not already on Amazon, we are unable to list it. However, if you are registered as an Amazon 'Pro Merchant', you can help us by telling Amazon about the missing publications. We would then be able to list them for sale. Please contact Lorraine Shannon for details. (1 December)

Hope 2008 - what is happening next?
Now that 2008 is over, so too at a national level is Hope08. However the organisers are keen to encourage local groups to take advantage of the logo and anything else which they produced that helps to facilitate ongoing ecumenical mission initiatives. The Hope office in Brighton will close at the end of March, and beyond that the website will continue to operate until at least the end of 2009. There is to be an honest and robust review published on 20th March and the full report (thirty pages) with a six page Executive Summary will be available thereafter (20 March: click links to download). A new book will also be published in July 2009 which will include the summary of the review, stories from the year and resources for ongoing mission initiatives.

Ecumenical Kirchentag

A gathering of Christians from Germany and around the world organised by the Protestant Churches and the Roman Catholic Church in Germany. Hundreds of thousands of visitors are expected for worship, discussions, workshops, bible studies, concerts, theatre, joint singing and much more. Many visitors from the UK have enjoyed the event in the past and it is hoped many more will do this time. You don't need German to be able to participate.

André Urbanczyk, a Lutheran Minister from Bavaria, is currently working in Bristol as an ecumenical guest of the Church of England. He is available during 2009 to give a presentation to churches on the Kirchentag; an ideal event for a Churches Together group. He can be contacted by e-mail or Tel: 0117 9043084. Wild Fires in Australia

The Australian Prime Minister Kevin Rudd and the Premier of Victoria John Brumby have announced that Australia will hold a National Day of Mourning on Sunday 22 February 2009.  The Australian High Commission would be grateful if this event, to honour the victims of Victoria's devastating bushfires and to recognise the courage and tireless efforts of emergency service workers, could be remembered in your prayers during this weekend's services.
This event has the support of the National Council of Churches in Australia and further information can be found in the attached press release by the Prime Minister of Australia. (February 2009)

Receptive Ecumenism

In essence, receptive ecumenism is simple. As we engage with people who belong to Churches not our own, we often focus on what gifts our own tradition can add to the ecumenical treasure trove. That's important. But receptive ecumenism goes further. Instead of looking at what we can bring, our strengths, perhaps, it invites us to look at the gifts and strengths of others, to notice what we can learn or receive from them. Click here for more about this, including a huge amount to read and listen to from the January 2009 conference at Ushaw College. (February 2009)

Easter resources

Easter resource material for 2009 is now available to download free from ACTS -- Action of Churches Together in Scotland. Two versions are available, one in pdf format and another in a Word text only for those who find downloading graphics difficult. Hard copies are also available upon request and costs will vary, but as a rough guide the charges will be for copying and postage and therefore will be kept to a minimum.
This year’s resource has been prepared by Rev Rachel Dobie, a Church of Scotland representative on ACTS Church Life Network, using the title ‘One of the Crowd’. She has used Mark’s gospel to prepare this text and looks at what it could have been like to be one of the crowd at that time, what could have been witnessed and the emotions which would have been experienced. The results have produced a readable thought provoking resource which will appeal to everyone. (February 2009)

Year of the Child 2009
2009 is the 30th Anniversary of the UNESCO Year of the Child. Various church leaders have suggested that next year highlights children in our church and society and how they matter to God. A major initiative has been undertaken by a coalition of denominational and evangelistic organizations to ‘encourage the church in children’s ministry’ and ‘reach the next generation’. 50k copies of a DVD are being distributed and resources placed on the website ‘Will You Make a Difference?’ at: http://www.wymad.org.uk/.   See also: http://www.yearofthechild2009.co.uk/

Hope 08

As the year of Hope 08 comes to an end the fifth and final main film, 'Gift of Hope', is now available on the website at www.hopeinfo.co.uk.   'Gift of Hope' features profound insights into the impact of senseless violence. Jimmy Mizen was killed in May this year just one day after his 16th birthday in an unprovoked attack. In the film his parents talk openly about trying to come to terms with their loss.

Examining the link between hope and faith, 'Gift of Hope' asks whether hope can prevail when such desperate tragedy strikes. It was commissioned by the Christian Enquiry Agency and Church Army as part of their commitment to making 2008 a year of hope.

The Hope08 website will remain as a resource for local groups throughout 2009.  (December 2008)

Week of Prayer for Christian Unity 18-25 January 2009 - Reconcile Your People

Each year the theme for the Week of Prayer for Christian Unity is developed by one country which produces outline material that is adapted for use in other parts of the world. Korea is the selected country for 2009 and they have chosen Ezekiel 37.15-28 which draws on insights from the Korean experience of a divided nation. As in previous years this has been adapted by a writers group from the four nations. This ecumenical service for use during the Week can be downloaded from the Churches Together in Britain and Ireland website www.ctbi.org.uk/weekofprayer. You will also find on the webpage an order form for printed materials (English service booklet, English/Welsh service booklet, prayer cards and posters). The printed materials are now being distributed by Norwich Books and Music (telephone number 01603 612914, email orders@norwichbooksandmusic.co.uk). Norwich Books and Music will also be happy to send further copies of the order form. (December 2008)
